Sympathy for Biafra Growing – OAU Angered

Lagos, May 23, 1968 – More African countries may decide to recognize Lt. Col. Ojukwu’s breakaway Biafra regime if the peace talks opening in Kampala, Uganda, today fail to make speedy progress.

It is clear that the division of the opinion on the Nigerian/Biafran civil war is threatening to undermine the 39-nation Organization of African Unity. Three countries, Gabon, Ivory Coast and Zambia have joined President Nyerere of Tanzania in recognizing the rebels.
