BIAFRAN WAR: NIGERIA, BIAFRA, AND THE BRITISH.

Spread the love

Dear Biafran-war-reports readers, welcome once again to our latest post about the Biafran war 1967-70, between Nigeria and the breakaway eastern region of Biafra. this particular instalment is from an editorial opinion of the Guardian newspaper (British not Nigerian), dated Monday 3rd of June 1968. This is four days after the Kampala peace talks hosted by the Ugandan president, Mr Milton Obote, had collapsed.

At the peace talks, the Biafran side had insisted on a cease-fire as a precondition for talks to go ahead, whilst Nigeria led by Chief Tony Enahoro, insisted on complete renunciation of secession by the Biafrans, as their own precondition. With no side willing to adjust on its stance, the peace conference folded.

The editorial article, criticised the British government, saying that it opinion that it was supplying legitimate arms to Lagos, was wrong, in that the government in Lagos it said was an illegal one, that came to power through a bloody coup and was unrecognised by Col Ojukwu.

The article continues by saying that saying that the British Prime minister Mr Harold Wilson, was a bit dishonest, when he said that the Brits has not stepped up arms supply to Nigeria, despite the fact that the Nigerian forces were now in possession of many arms and various munitions and also that many British officers were reportedly taking part in war operations and training Nigerian forces.

The article, also touches on the dilemma initially faced by the oil companies, whilst Biafra was in command of Bonny and other key oil installations – with regards to paying royalties. It also talked about possibility of guerrilla warfare as being an alternative that was being suggested by the Biafran authorities, and it called on Mr Wilson to have a change of policy.
