In this news report on the 30th of May 1968, which was also the Biafran one year of independence, the delegates of both warring sides met in Kampala; Uganda, to try and chart a way to peace. Also attending the conference was the International Red Cross organisation, led by its chief in Africa, Dr George Hoffman, who tried unsuccessfully to plead with the Nigerian delegation led by Chief Anthony Enahoro, to let in relief supplies to Biafra on humanitarian grounds.
Dr Hoffman and the Red Cross delegates were given the ‘cold shoulder’ by the Nigerians, who were not happy with way the Red Cross had been reporting the suffering of the Biafrans to the world, they reckoned the Red Cross were being one-sided and tended to support Biafra’s claim of delibrate genocide by the Nigerian government, much to the chagrin of the Nigerian government, as shown by its cool reception to Dr Hoffman and his entourage in Kampala.
The report also contains a broadcast by Col Emeka Ojukwu, urging Biafrans to go behind enemy lines and instigate guerilla warfare.
