BIAFRA: HAPPINESS AS WELL AS HUNGER

This is the headline from the Times, on the 26th of July 1968, describing life in Biafra, Aba to be specific, during the Biafran war. As of the above date, the city was still in Biafran hands and is just 2 months away from falling to the Nigeria 3rd Marine Commandos, led by their swashbuckling C.O. Col Benjy Adekunle.

As can be seen, the children look very happy and well fed at that point in time, in complete contrast to the sensational headline above, as the war front was about 40 miles away from them in Port Harcourt, in today’s Rivers state, but obviously by 1968 hunger war already an acute problem in Biafra elsewhere. Aba eventually fell in September 1968, making one to wonder if these beautiful and happy children made it out alive ? Do you recognise anyone in these pictures ? Are you the one in these pictures ? please let us know. War is indeed futile.
