Owerri is Captured as Ojukwu Flees His Enclave

Lagos, January 12, 1970 – The Federal Military Government yesterday announced formally the capture of Owerri, the provisional administrative headquarters of the secessionists.

The announcement of the recapture of Owerri, a strategic town about 100 miles (160km) southwest of Enugu, came a few hours after the secessionist leader, Ojukwu and some of his top aides were reported to have left their enclave.

The Biafran war starts to wind down to a final conclusion and the Nigerian army 3rd Division led by Col Olusegun Obasanjo pushes from the south and splits what remains of Biafra into two and then kept up the chase, unlike former tactics of stalling to re-group which was the hallmark of the Nigerian style, this hastened the fall of Owerri and put the Biafran forces in disarray.

This move by Col Obasanjo meant the Biafran high command had to make quick decisions on how to end the war and Col Achuzie had to seek the Nigerian Field Commanders out and offered them to come to Amichi in today’s Anambra state to accept the surrender in the field.
